Is Kris Allen an 'American Idol' game-changer?

Hands up if you thought Kris Allen wouldn't make the American Idol tour, much less the top five.
Now, with just three weeks remaining until the show's May 19 finale, a strong finish by the fresh-faced 23-year-old from Conway, Ark., could upset the seeming certainty of an Adam Lambert/Danny Gokey showdown.

Kris has proven to be the kind of contestant Idol voters like: an underdog and a fast learner. He's an appealing performer and canny interpreter, winning raves for his counterintuitive takes on Ain't No Sunshine and She Works Hard for the Money.

He could overtake Danny, whose recent lackluster song choices and static arrangements threaten his early-favorite status.

Allen first displayed signs of popularity when fans voted him into the finals, despite limited exposure in the show's initial weeks and the judges' lukewarm reaction to his Man in the Mirror.

Like Gokey and Lambert, he's never been among the three lowest vote-getters, showing stability in his voting bloc. Last season's winner, David Cook, and Reba McEntire have named Lambert and Allen as their favorites. Radio shows have latched on to his performances, along with Lambert's, for their post-Idol recaps.

Still, he's occasionally taken his lumps from the judges. Simon Cowell called his bright funk version of All She Wants to Do Is Dance "indulgent, boring, forgettable." Randy Jackson found his performance of Falling Slowly, from the film Once, "pitchy from Note One."

But Allen has always followed his missteps with strong performances, and his version of Falling Slowly propelled Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's 2-year-old original into the top 30 on iTunes' download chart.

Even if Kris doesn't make the finale, his exit — whether tomorrow or two weeks from now — could dramatically alter voting patterns.

The flamboyant Lambert engenders devotion or distaste, the polar opposite of the more conservative Gokey. Allen's base could shift allegiance to Lambert, who shares his penchant for tinkering with arrangements, or they could align with Gokey, who like Allen serves as a church worship leader. Where those votes go might well determine the outcome.

Should Danny get voted off after an uncharacteristically bad performance, Adam likely would pick up few of the bespectacled singer's voters. And that could make Kris Allen a very tough man to beat.
